Job Description :
Scope:

Perform duties to assist patrons, perform any range of circulation desk activities and maintain library materials in assigned locations, working in assigned branch and within the limits of prescribed routines. Uphold the Library System’s mission and values in the pursuit of all duties; respect for the individual, our organization, and the community, excellence in everything we do, and integrity in our actions, while providing excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.

Essential Functions:

1.   Set up circulation desk for daily operations, initiate library system computers, cash register drawer and other equipment including public access computers, peripherals, and copiers. Ensure adequate supply of paper, toner and other required supplies. Close circulation desk and computer stations at end of business day. Retrieve materials from book drop and check materials in through computer system, determining appropriate branch assignment, arrange books on carts for shelving or in boxes for distribution to proper locations. Sort and distribute incoming mail and record receipt of periodicals.

2.   Greet patrons, respond to questions, provide routine reference and directional assistance and refer patrons to librarian for significant reference issues. Maintain computer sign in logs and assist patrons with routine troubleshooting on public computer stations and report more significant problems. Answer telephones and answer routine inquiries and direct reference calls as required.

3.   Receive materials from patrons, check the condition of materials, assess late and damage fines, check materials in, respond to computerized prompts to indicate fines, explain fining procedure, collect fines from patrons, make proper change and credit patron's computerized record with payment.

4.   Respond to patron's requests to check out materials or purchase items for sale, using computer system. Respond to computer prompts regarding account holds, lost or stolen cards or similar messages in accordance with prescribe procedures. Process patron requests for reserves on books. Receive and process gift books from patrons. Process patron requests to release print jobs and collect related printing fees. Provide routine information as to operation of programs or access to internet sites and e-mail and refer inquiries regarding training or reference issues to librarians.

5.   Respond to patron's requests for library cards, explain procedures and policies, review identification to ensure that it meets with requirements and prepare library card. Offer patrons opportunity to register to vote and provide required forms.

6.   Collect materials from library tables and boxes from other locations, prepare books for shelving, shelve and shift books and read shelves to ensure that all materials are placed in proper location.

7.   Maintain copy machines with required paper and toner and clear jams. Remove cash from copy machines or other vending areas. Count, reconcile and prepare cash for deposit, preparing required documentation.

8.   Type memoranda, supply lists and other data and prepare payroll sheets.

9.   File items in vertical file and purge vertical files as directed. Maintain library bulletin boards and displays.

Other duties may include, but are not limited to:

1.   Perform or assist with any system operations, as required or directed to maintain work flow or respond to emergency conditions.

2.   Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specific level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements and policies.

3.   Monitor patrons in the Library and remind them of Library policies as required to ensure that the resources of the Library are fully accessible to all patrons.

4.   Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition. Ensure safe operating conditions within area of responsibility. Perform other related duties as assigned.
